Intensive Care Medicine Research Group (Dr. Simone Britsch)

The Intensive Care Medicine Research Group at the University Medical Center Mannheim is dedicated to advancing critical care through innovative research and a strong focus on translational medicine.

Our primary objective...

...is to improve the prognosis and quality of life for critically ill patients by bridging the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application. Our research is driven by cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, metabolomics, and artificial intelligence (AI), integrated with clinical expertise in non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and experimental studies.

Our translational approach...

...enables us to rapidly implement scientific insights into clinical practice, allowing for real-time data analysis, early identification of metabolic changes, and enhanced decision-making processes at the bedside. By translating research findings into effective therapies and predictive models, we aim to set new standards in intensive care medicine and improve patient outcomes.

Research Areas

Our research is structured into five main focus areas:

1. Machine Learning in Intensive Care

We develop predictive models to enhance early detection of complications, such as icu mortality and specific organ failure, and to optimize patient-specific treatment strategies. Real-time data analysis is applied to improve decision-making processes on the ICU.

Key Projects:

  • Predictive analytics for dynamic icu outcomes
  • Cluster analysis for detection of organ failures through AI-enhanced data monitoring

Group Leaders: Dr. Markward Britsch, Dr. Simone Britsch

2. Weaning and Mechanical Ventilation

In collaboration with the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg, our team explores new strategies for effective weaning from mechanical ventilation. We focus on personalized ventilation protocols and advanced monitoring techniques to minimize complications and optimize recovery.

Key Projects:

  • Advanced weaning protocols to reduce ICU stay
  • Development of personalized ventilation strategies

Group Leaders: Dr. Simon Lindner, Dr. Julia Michels, Dr. Simone Britsch

3. Experimental Research and Metabolomics

Our experimental research is dedicated to understanding the metabolic changes in critically ill patients. Using Metabolomics, we identify biomarkers for organ failure, and other life-threatening conditions, providing new insights into critical care pathophysiology.

Key Projects:

  • Metabolic profiling of patients with cardiogenic shock and respiratory failure
  • Identification of biomarkers for multi-organ failure

Group Leaders: Dr. Katharine Sattler, Dr. Simone Britsch

4. Prospective Clinical Studies – Focus on NIV

We conduct clinical trials aimed at optimizing non-invasive ventilation (NIV) with a focus on diaphragm thickness measurement and transpulmonary pressure (TPP). Our goal is to enhance the management and recovery of patients on ventilatory support.

Key Projects:

  • Diaphragm ultrasound measurements during NIV
  • Clinical trials on transpulmonary pressure-guided ventilation

Group Leaders: Dr. Simon Lindner, Dr. Simone Britsch

5. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Critical Care

In collaboration with the Mannheim Institute for intelligent Systems in Medicine (MIISM) at the University Hospital Heidelberg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), we develop robotic-assisted systems for ICU patients. Our research explores AI-based technologies for patient monitoring and rehabilitation.

Key Projects:

  • Robotc systems for patient – robot interaction and care
  • AI-driven monitoring for early complication detection

Group Leaders: Prof. Dr. Jan Stallkamp, Dr. Markward Britsch, Dr. Simone Britsch
